Mariya was born in Tokyo on March 25. Her father Seiichi Yashiro was a playwright who ranks with Yukio Mishima as a representative Japanese playwright. Her mother Kazuko Yamamoto was an actress who appeared on Yasujiro Ozu's and a numbers of Japanese film.

Since she left the Takarazuka Revue in 1985, she devotes herself to the theatre throughout her actress life as her leading works are more than one hundred plays. She is highly regarded as a rare theatre actress in Japan.

She studied under Adrian Noble of The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1987. She worked with Robert Lepage, Yukio Ninagawa, Hideki Noda, Robert Allan Ackerman, David Leveaux and gained a generous reliability from them with her acting.

She sings from opera to chanson of Édith Piaf with getting highly reputation for her wide range genre of singing. Her phantasmagoric voice received a high praise from Yoyo Ma as Ma said 'your voice is music'.

She keeps acting a long-run performance with her father work -'Yaya', a one-woman play which is about a stormy life of a woman from her sixteen to seventy-two years old. She won a numbers of drama award with this play. She started acting'Yaya'from 1992 until today including the performances in New York and Lithuanian with a high evaluation.

One of the masterpiece of her father -'Miyagino', a two-man play has became a film in this spring which took four years to complete the production. Mariya acts as Miyagino.
